Emma Massick & Backpacking the John Muir Trail

Emma Massick Backpacking John Muir Trail Freeze-Dried Food

Every so often I receive a truly inspiring email that makes me want to jump up and down with shared excitement. That's how I met Emma, a female entrepreneur about to set off on a 3 week solo backpacking journey. Badass much?! She had dreamt of backpacking the John Muir Trail since she was a child and had decided it was time to make that dream a reality. To help Emma with her journey, we sent her a care package of Bushka meals!

About Emma:

My name is Emma Massick, but on the trails I go by Pepper. I put pepper on everything! I even filled both sides of my backpacking salt/pepper shaker with pepper because I felt like it was more important to me than salt!
I love to hike, rock climb, and be challenged in an outdoor setting. I love coffee and the human connections that can develop over a steaming mug. I love connecting with people in new online markets, and learning and exploring the new methods of communication that are popping up daily!

Emma Massick Elm Tree SocialI am a freelance social media manager and content creator. I help outdoor brands tell their story by making meaningful and memorable connections with their audience and relieve headaches for outdoor leaders trying to accomplish this in their own space!  When I was around 10 years old, my family went on a summer vacation to Yosemite, and I fell in love. Surrounded by powerful waterfalls, lush forests and tall mountain faces towering higher than I could imagine, I felt that I was truly at home. I have always loved to read and learn so I read a Yosemite book in one of the gift shops while I waited for my siblings to finish looking at all of the odds and ends that were for sale. I read about the John Muir Trail (JMT) and I thought to myself, “I’m gonna do that when I’m a grown up!”

Fast forward to a few years ago, I watched an awesome documentary called Mile, Mile and A Half and was reminded and re-inspired for my JMT dream. I said to myself, “well, I’m a grown-up now so I suppose it’s time to do this thing!” And applied for a trail permit. I got my permit the very next day, I believe it was meant to be! I will be leaving out of Happy Isles during the fourth week of July, hiking solo and I am so excited, nervous and so ready to be living this thing that I have been planning for months and dreaming about for years! Fun Facts About Me:

  • I have a pet bearded dragon named Hemingway!
  • I like to paint! You can check out my art on my blog at www.pepperhikes.com/art.
  • I have been to 8 countries and 17 states, and plan on going to many more in the near future! I love traveling and experiencing new places/people/things.
  • When I was younger, my school had a “dress as what you want to be when you grow up” day. Most of the kids in my class came dressed as firefighters, policemen, veterinarians, ballerinas and princesses. I came dressed as the President. Not so sure I want to follow that political path anymore, but I sure do love making a connection with people and making major changes in people’s lives!

How to Make the Best Coffee in the Backcountry

I only have three requirements when I’m making coffee in the backcountry: 1) the coffee must taste great (duh); 2) the coffee can’t have a gritty feeling; and 3) cleanup must be fast and simple. Now, as a self-proclaimed coffee addict, I’ll admit that criteria #1 completely depends on the quality and freshness of the coffee beans and what your taste for coffee is. I like a black mug of joe from medium to light roasted beans.
